Atomic initially released the Backland 107 by focusing almost solely on the ski's performance in the fluff, musing, "The Backland 107 is a powder-charging ski." As one of the widest freeride touring skis in the Atomic fleet, the Backland surfs through powder like a dream, no doubt. With 107 below the boot, a Powder Rocker, and HRZN Tech in the tip, this ski serves up more surface area and achieves maximum flotation in the deeps. Perhaps the more interesting story, however, is how it handles everything else.

It's not every day you're endlessly carving buttery lines and joyfully pitting yourself in a pillowy dreamland. More often than not, you're encountering boilerplate and wind-blown/tracked-out powder and crud between glorious stashes. Thanks to those HRZN tips that decrease deflection in the chop and Dura Cap Sidewalls that provide a stable and smooth grip, the Backland 107 can charge through the crud with aplomb. Hey, this is no groomer ski, but you can launch into variable terrain with confidence that your sticks aren't going to get all grabby and eager to kick you to your derriere.

If you're looking to build out a simple quiver of two, perhaps a ski for the resort and one more for freeride touring, the Backland 107 has a place on your list.

  • Freeride touring, powder-bashing, variable terrain capable ski that handles the skin track well
  • One of the widest skis in the Atomic fleet remains lightweight thanks to a full-length Carbon Backbone and Ultra Power Woodcore (poplar)
  • Powder Rocker and HRZN Tech in the tip deliver more surface area for maximum flotation in deep pow
  • Dura Cap Sidewall allows for smooth and stable handling on harder snow
  • Fiberglass layers create a ski that is smooth and stable while remaining lightweight and dynamic
  • Shines when being pushed hard on the shovels and skied from an aggressive, forward stance
