Position Available: Service Department Manager/Head Ski Tech

Full/Part Time: Full Time (40 hrs/wk)

Job Description and Responsibilities:

The primary role of the Service Department Manager is to ensure an exceptional customer experience with our ski services and rentals. The following 4 responsibilities are at the core of managing a successful rental/service shop and represent the fundamental responsibilities of the position: (1) Rental Management, (2) Service Management, (3) Record Keeping and Operational Management, and (4) Personnel Management.  

The Service Department Manager will spend roughly 50% of their time managing the tech room- this will fluctuate depending on seasonal demands. The Service Department Manager is also, at times, the only ski tech, and is generally responsible for all Service Department work. When not engaged with the tech room, the SDM will operate in the capacity of Sales Lead, maintaining a leadership role with our staff and helping to direct the sales associates and sales floor. The main responsibilities of the Service Department Manger include, but are not limited to, the following:

Rental Department Management

  • Work with the Operations Manager to maintain the Rental Calendar and ensure accuracy of information entered into the Rental Management System
  • Keep the rental shop, all rental equipment, and service department tools clean, tuned, and in good repair.
  • Communicate Rental Shop needs to Operations Manager and appropriate Category Buyer

Service Management

  • Know processes and maintenance for tech shop machinery
  • Provide impeccable customer service and recommendations for ski and board services. This included a detailed knowledge of what we can and cannot repair.
  • A working knowledge of how to perform all ski services offered at Wilderness Exchange

Record Keeping/Operational Management

  • Maintain impeccable record keeping of all Rental Forms and Liability Waivers.
  • Reporting of rental and service department performance
  • Keep an accurate and updated inventory of all rental equipment and service department tools and work with appropriate

Sales Lead/Personnel Management:

  • Building the team and mentoring the staff who will be operational in the Service and Tech Department. 
  • Operating in a Sales Lead capacity while working the sales floor

Other Job Requirements:

  • 1-2 years previous management experience preferred
  • 2-3 years previous ski tech experience preferred 
  • Must be psyched on the gear we sell and rent
  • Good sense of humor is preferred, but not required
  • Must have proof of Covid vaccination

Position Available: Ski Tech

Job Description and Responsibilities:

The two most important components of the WEU mission statement are: (1) to offer the best possible prices on quality outdoor gear, and (2) to provide the highest level of customer service in outdoor specialty retail.  

The primary role of the Ski Technician is to provide impeccable quality of work and ensure an exceptional customer experience within our services department. The Ski Technician will spend the majority of their time working on ski services in the ski shop, but will also be responsible for upkeep and maintenance of rental equipment. The Ski Technician reports to the Service Department Manager.

Service Department Requirements:

  • Must know processes and maintenance for tech shop machinery.
  • Provide impeccable customer service and recommendations for ski and board services. 
  • Must possess a working knowledge of how to perform all ski services offered, including, but not limited to:
    • Binding Mounts (Alpine, AT, Telemark)
    • Edge Tune and Wax
    • Climbing Skin Cutting
    • Filling compressed air cylinders for avalanche airbags
    • Sharpening of ice tools and crampons
  • Creativity in finding ways to work in a small space; maximizing storage space to meet the demands of rental equipment and customer equipment.
  • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of ski boot modifications and customization
    • Performing basic boot-fitting and liner molds
    • Advanced boot-fitting skills (punching shells, grinding, wedges, etc)

Rental Department Requirements:

  • Help maintain Rental Calendar and ensure accuracy of information entered into the Rental Management System
  • Keep rental shop (including ALL rental gear and tools) clean, organized, and in good repair
  • Keep ski rental fleet tuned and waxed
  • Keep all crampons and ice tools sharpened
  • Communicate Rental Shop needs to the Service Department Manager
  • Communicate any relevant reservation information to customers with reservations via phone/email
  • Prepare seasonal rental fleets for storage in the off-season
  • Prepare seasonal rental fleets for use in-season

Other Job Requirements:

  • 1-2 years previous ski tech experience

Ideally, we’d be stoked on a candidate that has previous outdoor retail experience, but as long as you have a passion for the outdoor culture and lifestyle, and an abnormally high level of psych for getting folks the gear they need, then you’d likely be a good fit. Some base knowledge of the categories that we sell is required, and semi-expert knowledge of at least one of the categories is preferred. Our categories include, but are not limited to: Climbing, Backpacking, Technical Apparel, Footwear, and Backcountry Skiing.
